Second City Signing Spree

The Stars have announced the acquisition of three European veterans to the clubs to shore up the end of the season competition.  Midfielders Torsten Frings and Jan Gunnar Solli, as well as striker Danny Koevermans, have agreed to join the club.  Frings and Koevermans, however, will not be eligible until the MLS transfer window opens.

Making way for the new signings, the Stars were forced to release Jamie Smith, Arturo Alvarez, and Bouna Coundoul.  Asked if he was concerned about finishing the season with only one goalkeeper, the Manager responded that he has complete faith in Jon Busch's ability between the pipes.  "Besides," he added, "We all know Frings is more than capable of lending a hand in that department if needed."

Stars add Javier Martina

After a disappointing loss this past week, SCSC has made yet another change to the roster, vowing to its fans that such low offensive output would not be again tolerated.  To bolster the attack, the Stars have brought in Dutch striker Javier Martina of Toronto, who was released by his former club to make way for US national team midfielder Benny Feilhaber.  Sal Zizzo, who has struggled to find the back of the net has been released in the deal.

Double Switch

Second City Soccer Club has announced two transactions this week.  First, the club signed Arturo Alvarez (RSL) from waivers and dropped Michael Stephens (LA), who has struggled to find the pitch this year after a promising rookie season.  Then, with the news that two other players would be released from their clubs as two highly sought after new players entered the pool, the Stars decided to pounce on goalkeeper Jon Busch (SJ), while releasing Joe Cannon (VAN), who has struggled with injuries so far this year.  The moves show that the club is far from resting on the laurels of its impressive 3-0-0 start and is constantly looking to improve.

SCSC Still Unbeaten!

Man of the Match: Brad Davis
The Stars carried their streak to 3-0-0 in their inaugural season with a victory against Gold Coast. And what a victory it was, with a 2011 league-high seven points scored! Second City was cruising from the start with a goal from Simon Dawkins and an assist from Davide Chiumiento.  Patrick Nyarko and Diego Chaves linked up to provide two points for the team, but all four were topped by a heroic performance from Brad Davis, who registered three assists to put the game beyond reach. The fans are optimistic that the side can maintain its form next week against a Union SC squad which has gotten off to a relatively slow start.  If the Stars can take all three points from USC, they will be tied with Gateway United (4-0-0) who have the bye next week.

Sweet success!

The Stars have won their first match in the BSL 4-2 over Capital District, and what a match it was! SCSC got the result on the back of goals from Diego Chaves and Jamie Smith as well as assists from Davide Chiumiento and Teemu Tainio.  Josh Wolff even knocked home an impressive finish, but was unable to qualify off of the bench. All in all, a very solid freshman performance from the boys. The Gunners made a decent showing, registering two assists, though the ruling on Sean Johnson's contribution is highly controversial.  SCSC gets a bye next week, a good chance to rest and ease into the season.

Pre-game: Match week 1

Joe Cannon gets the start against
the Gunners
The BSL season is about kick off and everyone from the players to the management to the fans could not be more excited for Second City's inaugural matchup against Capital District.  The Gunners had a so-so 2010, but that doesn't mean you can count them out.  After all, they won the BSL Cup as recently as 2009 and have a roster loaded with talented players like captain Freddy Montero and Guatemalan international Marco Pappa.  Fans may be a bit surprised with the manager's decisions for the lineup this week, given that a few of the later-drafted players are starting ahead of the higher-drafted players.

The most notable surprise is Joe Cannon getting the nod between the posts ahead of a relatively early pick, Bouna Coundoul. Coach Weimers explained, "The great thing about this team is the depth. We can play or sit guys based on how we feel about their week-to-week performances and aren't scrambling for replacements in the case of an injury scare like we have with Sal and Ousmane. Not to mention, having two rock solid goalkeepers is a huge plus as we can take each week's conditions into account."  The added emphasis on goalkeeping in the scoring system this season may make holding two keepers all the more important. Here is the lineup:

Goalkeeper
Joe Cannon

Position players
Brad Davis
Patrick Nyarko
Dax McCarty
Jamie Smith
Diego Chaves
Davide Chiumiento
Michael Stephens
Teemu Tainio

Substitutes
Josh Wolff
Sal Zizzo
Chris Tierney

Bouna Coundoul
Ousmane Dabo

Dax McCarty joins Stars!

Second City Soccer Club is pleased to announce the official signing of midfielder Dax McCarty as the team's first ever player.  McCarty was acquired from Gold Coast FC in exchange for a fourth round draft pick.

"Though we're aware the news got out some time ago, we wanted to wait until all the paperwork was final before we made the official announcement," explained Stars GM Clayton Weimers. "We're very excited to bring a player of Dax's caliber to the side and we strongly believe he will have a big year for us."  Weimers was known to be in attendance as McCarty captained the USA side which tied with Chile in January.  Could this have been a motivating factor behind the signing?  "I was definitely glad to see Dax get the armband in that game, but the truth is, he's been on the radar for some time."

When asked if there would be any more pre-drafts trades, Weimers commented that he saw it as unlikely, but he would not rule out the possibility should an enticing offer come in.
